Taupō’s main bungy experience is AJ Hackett’s 47 m jump over the Waikato River. Our verdict — it is especially worthwhile for first-time jumpers and North Island visitors who want dramatic river scenery without adding a trip to Queenstown. Choose solo or tandem, stay dry or request a water touch; river contact is never guaranteed.

The featured ticket is the AJ Hackett Taupō Bungy, not a sightseeing visit or a jet boat ride. It includes one jump and, on the current GetYourGuide listing, photos and video. You meet the crew, confirm your eligibility and weight, receive a briefing and have your equipment fitted and checked before heading to the edge. The anticipation is a significant part of the experience: the freefall itself is brief, followed by the cord’s stretch and rebounds.

Choose a solo jump for your own countdown, or tandem if sharing the moment is part of the appeal. Both people still need to qualify. A dry jump is a complete bungy experience; requesting water touch adds the possibility of brushing the river or being dunked. Tell the jump master what you want at check-in. The depth of contact is a crew decision, and river conditions can rule it out altogether.

The minimum age is 10, with an accompanying parent for ages 10–14 on this listing. The operator’s solo bungy range is 35–140 kg. Tandem has a 180 kg combined maximum and a 30 kg maximum difference between participants. Read the practical section before paying, especially when booking a combo.

Your first jump: nerves, positions and the countdown

You do not need a separate guided upgrade: equipment fitting, checks and the crew’s briefing are part of the experience. Tell them if you are nervous, and ask about suitable jump positions before reaching the edge. Do not assume that a particular position is available for every participant. If diving head-first is what puts you off, compare the feet-first swing below.

You normally make the leap yourself. AJ Hackett says its crew does not push guests unless they ask; the team coaches you through the countdown. Feeling nervous is different from wanting to stop, so be clear with the crew about your decision. The on-day refusal policy still matters when deciding whether to book.

Your included photos and video are delivered digitally. Download and save them after the experience so you have your own copies.

What makes the Taupō bungy different?

The setting is a large part of the decision. A cantilevered platform projects out from the cliff above the turquoise Waikato River, with steep gorge walls framing the jump. You look into open space over the water as you approach the edge. It is a very different starting point from standing in the middle of a bridge.

Taupō is promoted as New Zealand’s highest water-touch bungy and its only cliff-top bungy. The distinction is the combination of the 47 m platform and possible river contact; it does not mean New Zealand’s highest bungy overall. If touching the water is why this experience appeals, arrive knowing that staying dry may still be the day’s only option.

Convenience matters too. The base is a short drive from central Taupō, and non-jumping friends can watch free. That makes it practical for a mixed group: one person can take on the jump while others enjoy the river setting without buying an activity ticket.

Taupō Bungy vs Taupō Swing

Choose bungy for the vertical leap and elastic rebound; choose swing for a feet-first drop followed by a broad arc over the river. The swing may be easier to contemplate if the idea of stepping head-first from the bungy platform is the sticking point. It still has a sudden release and a substantial drop, so “easier” is personal, not a promise of a gentle ride.

These are USD estimates of AJ Hackett’s direct prices checked 14 September 2026. Operator prices below are approximate USD conversions, rounded to whole dollars using the Reserve Bank of New Zealand rate for 14 September 2026. Operators may charge in NZD; your payment provider’s exchange rate and fees can change the final USD total. Checkout prices and ticket conditions can differ by channel. See the operator’s bungy information and swing details for the current comparison.

Bungy + Swing Combo

If you already want both sensations, the Bungy + Swing Combo is the natural upgrade. Both activities take place at the Taupō Bungy & Swing Centre, so you avoid arranging another activity base simply to add a second thrill. The swing sends you out over the same gorge and returns you to the platform by winch.

The GetYourGuide combo includes one bungy and one swing for the same person, plus photos and video of both. It cannot be split so that one friend uses the jump and another uses the swing. Solo or tandem can be chosen on the day subject to crew approval, with the same price per person. Coordinate with the operator if you want to participate together.

AJ Hackett’s direct adult combo is approximately US$241, compared with approximately US$298 for the two adult activities bought separately. Compare the actual dates and inclusions before assuming that another booking channel has the same total. The GYG listing labels its duration as one day; that is not a promise of an all-day guided outing. Ask the crew how much time to reserve for your scheduled pair of activities.

Combo eligibility needs care: GYG’s combo text currently lists a 150 kg upper weight, while AJ Hackett’s bungy page specifies 140 kg for a solo jump. Use the bungy limit when planning to do both and obtain operator confirmation if you are close to a boundary. The swing’s higher limit does not automatically make someone eligible for bungy.

Bungy combinations in Taupō

Huka Falls Jet Boat + Bungy Combo

See our dedicated Taupō Jet Boat & Bungy Combo guide for Jump Jet availability, the package-versus-separate price comparison and how to arrange the two activities on different days.

For a Taupō trip centred on the river, this is the most relevant extension: a bungy above the Waikato, followed by Hukafalls Jet’s 30-minute boat experience on a different stretch of the river. The jump delivers a concentrated burst of freefall; the jet boat adds a longer ride with river scenery and spins. Read our Huka Falls Jet guide for the boat route, meeting point and separate participation rules.

AJ Hackett sells a genuine Bungy + Jetboat package. Its adult price converts to approximately US$209 and its combo page asks you to call or use live chat to book. This is an operator package, not the bungy-only GetYourGuide ticket with an implied boat inclusion. Confirm the two activity times, transfer arrangements and what happens if one activity cannot operate. The bungy centre and the jet boat base are different places; leave time to travel and check in again.

Rafting, skydive and three-activity alternatives

For a longer river outing, AJ Hackett also lists a Bungy + Whitewater Rafting Combo with Tongariro River Rafting. Our Taupō rafting guide explains how rafting differs from a jet boat ride. Match the rafting requirements as well as the jump requirements before choosing this option.

If your priority is a second kind of freefall, consider the operator’s Bungy + Skydive Combo. The Air3 Combo adds bungy, swing and skydiving. These are alternatives to the three main choices above, with separate schedules, eligibility and weather considerations. Confirm the current skydive option and travel between bases before committing your whole day.

Is Taupō Bungy worth it?

Our view: it is especially compelling if the river setting, first bungy experience or water-touch possibility is the point of the trip. You get a distinctive cliff-top jump close to town, and the included media helps you keep the moment without budgeting for a separate photo package on the featured listing. A nervous first-timer does not need previous jumping experience, but does need to be willing to take the leap after the briefing.

It also suits North Island travellers whose itinerary does not include Queenstown, couples who want a shared countdown, and groups with non-jumpers who can enjoy the free viewing deck. The short appointment can fit into a half-day plan without everyone committing to a full adventure package.

Our recommendation for a first visit is to start with the standard bungy. Add the swing if you specifically want to compare its sweeping arc with the bungy’s rebound. Choose the jet boat combo if you would rather balance the brief jump with a longer shared river activity. Book a tandem jump because you want to share the experience, while checking that both people independently qualify.

Think about value in terms of the experience you want, rather than minutes in the air. The fall is short, and much of the appointment is preparation, anticipation and recovery. Someone looking for a longer shared outing may get more enjoyment from a Taupō jet boat tour. Someone drawn to the challenge of leaving the platform may remember those few seconds far more vividly than a longer activity.

If your ambition is New Zealand’s highest bungy, look at the 134 m Nevis Bungy near Queenstown. If aerial views and the build-up to leaving an aircraft appeal more than an elastic rebound, explore the skydive combinations. These choices answer different wishes; height alone is not the best way to choose your Taupō day.

Request water touch if it adds to your excitement and you are comfortable getting wet. Choose dry if you want the drop without the dunk. Neither choice removes the intensity. Do not book solely on a guaranteed water-touch photograph, and do not treat tandem as a way around either person’s age or weight requirements.

Practical information for your jump

Age, weight and tandem rules

Participants must be at least 10 years old. AJ Hackett requires adult consent at check-in for anyone under 15; the featured GYG listing asks children aged 10–14 to have a parent with them. Bungy participants must meet the 35 kg minimum, with 140 kg the operator’s solo maximum. For tandem, both must be eligible and the combined weight must be no more than 180 kg, with no more than 30 kg between them. Final suitability is assessed by the crew.

Medical disclosure and access

The operator asks you to disclose conditions such as blood-pressure or heart problems, epilepsy, neurological conditions, asthma, diabetes, panic or anxiety attacks, prosthetics, recent sprains and fractures. Its Taupō rules exclude pregnancy and photosensitive epilepsy, and require a doctor’s certificate for osteoporosis, scoliosis or a recent concussion. These are operator participation requirements, not a complete medical assessment; discuss your circumstances before paying. AJ Hackett’s participation rules explain the current restrictions.

Bungy carries inherent risk despite the briefing and equipment checks. A tandem partner or an adapted harness does not establish medical suitability. If you have mobility or other access needs, ask specifically about reaching the platform and the recovery route, as well as spectator access. A free viewing area does not establish that every part of the site is accessible.

Clothing, glasses and contact lenses

Wear comfortable clothes and secure, closed-toe shoes. Add warm layers in cold weather; if you hope to get dunked, a towel and dry change of clothes are sensible extras. Empty pockets and remove loose jewellery before the equipment checks. Leave phones and other loose items with a companion or where the crew directs.

AJ Hackett’s current FAQ says you cannot wear your own glasses during the activity, and prescription safety goggles are available to discuss with the crew. The reviewed information does not give a clear contact-lens rule for water touch. Contact the operator in advance about lenses, particularly if you want a dunk, rather than assuming the glasses rule answers that question.

Arrival, parking and spectators

Use 202 Spa Road, Taupō in your navigation and the meeting instructions on your voucher. Allow roughly 5–10 minutes to drive from central Taupō; free parking is available at the centre. Arrive 15 minutes before your booking and allow about one hour for the bungy experience, with extra time if you want to browse your media or wait for friends.

Have your booking confirmation ready and check the voucher for any identification requirements. Carrying photo ID is a useful precaution. Opening times vary with the season and daylight, so use your confirmed appointment and the operator’s current hours when planning arrival or a spectator visit.

Spectators can watch free from the viewing deck overlooking the Waikato River. If you need transport, arrange it explicitly: the GYG listing mentions Taupō transport, while the operator describes limited transport options. Do not assume a hotel pickup has been reserved just because transport appears in the inclusions.

Weather and cancellation

Rain does not automatically cancel the activity. AJ Hackett operates in most weather, with the crew deciding when conditions exceed operating limits. If the operator cannot run the activity, its FAQ describes transfer, rescheduling or refund options. Follow your booking provider’s process for an existing reservation.

The featured GetYourGuide listings currently advertise free cancellation up to 24 hours beforehand. AJ Hackett’s direct-booking FAQ states that cancellations more than 48 hours before the activity qualify for a refund minus the stated card transaction fee; cancellations less than 48 hours beforehand are non-refundable. Check your own ticket’s deadline and terms. Reaching the platform and deciding not to jump is generally treated as a non-refundable no-show under the operator’s policy; it is different from the crew cancelling the activity. Operator cancellation policy.

When should you book?

AJ Hackett recommends booking at least 48 hours ahead to secure your preferred time. It is particularly sensible to plan ahead for a summer or school-holiday trip, a tandem jump, a coordinated jet boat or rafting outing, or a visit with only one free day. Reserve a suitable slot rather than leaving the jump until the gaps between other bookings are too small.

Same-day spaces may be available, but they give you less control over timing. Check availability rather than assuming you can walk in, and confirm the schedule with the operator when combining activities.

Best time to do the Taupō bungy

Taupō bungy is a year-round activity, subject to operating conditions and available sessions. Warmer weather makes the prospect of a water touch and changing afterwards more appealing; in winter, bring layers and consider whether you would rather stay dry. Rain alone is not a reason to assume your booking will be cancelled.

There is no verified morning-versus-afternoon advantage that guarantees a better jump or a water touch. Choose a slot that leaves breathing room in your day. If combining it with jet boating, confirm the package schedule first. Booking earlier in your stay can leave more room to rearrange plans if weather intervenes, without promising that another slot will be available.
