Huka Falls is the focus of this 30-minute ride. You travel by jet boat on the Waikato River and approach the waterfall from below, where the scale and force of the falling water look very different from the public viewing bridge. Hukafalls Jet is the jet boat operator permitted to make this close approach to the base.

What the ride feels like

The journey is an active part of the experience. Your professional driver takes the boat past native bush and rock cliffs, mixing views along the river with 360-degree spins. The listing describes speeds of up to 80 kilometres per hour. This is a fast, open-air boat ride with spray, rather than a slow sightseeing cruise.

What to bring

A life jacket and professional driver are included, together with heated handrails in winter. Bring comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate layers. Photos and videos are optional purchases, subject to availability; they are not included in the ticket. Secure anything loose and follow the crew’s instructions about phones and cameras.

Find the departure base

Go to Wairakei Tourist Park on Karetoto Road, using the meeting instructions on your voucher. The operator asks riders to check in at least 15 minutes before departure. The advertised 30 minutes describes the ride, so leave additional time for arrival, check-in and briefing.

Check participation rules

The GYG listing excludes participants under 100 centimetres tall, pregnant travellers and people with back problems. Read the current restrictions before booking and contact the operator with individual suitability questions. The waterfall’s public viewpoints and the boat departure base are different places.

Make your choice
